It is legally required that the main contractor verifies your identity when you start working on a construction site for the first time. Through the ID check, you can do this yourself in advance, ensuring there are no delays at the site office. Whether you do the ID check on-site or on your phone is determined by the main contractor.

How does it work?
The ID check involves a series of steps:
1. Install the “CheckedID by Bouwpas” app
First, temporarily install a separate app for the ID check. You can recognize the app by the Bouwpas logo with “ID” on it.
2. Start the ID check
Once the app is installed, you can start the ID check by tapping the green “start ID check” button.
3. Choose the type of document
Do you have a passport or an ID card? Make the correct selection in the app.
4. Remove your phone and ID from any holders/cases
If you use a holder or case for your passport or ID card, or if your phone has a case, remove them before proceeding.
5. Take a photo of your ID with the app
The app will first ask you to take a picture of the front of your ID, the side with your photo, name, and other details. The app provides tips to help you take a good photo.
Ensure the photo has minimal glare.
6. Scan the chip in your passport
The app will now read the chip in your passport. If you receive a message that it failed, simply try again.
⚠️ Pay close attention to the animation in the app, as it shows you how to position your phone over your ID.
7. Take a selfie
The app confirms that the ID is genuine, but is the ID really yours? The app compares the photo on your ID with a selfie. Follow the instructions in the app to take your selfie.
8. Wait for confirmation
You’re done! The app completes the check. You will automatically receive a notification from Bouwpas once the ID check is finalized.
9. Delete the CheckedID app
Since you only need to do the ID check once, you can delete the app after successfully completing the check.
Privacy
How long are the ID check data retained?
Bouwpas retains your data as required by GDPR: no longer than necessary.
Failed ID checks are stored for 24 hours to assist with troubleshooting issues. Completed ID checks are stored for 10 years because this information must be retained for the Organization (the main contractor of a construction project).
What data from my ID is processed?
The processed data includes the following list. It may vary slightly depending on the type of ID, for example, because newer IDs show less information than older ones, or because the ID is from a country other than the Netherlands. The data may be fewer than listed below but never more.
- Type of document
- Nationality
- Document number
- Issue date*
- Expiration date
- Gender*
- First names
- Last name
- Date of birth
- Place of birth*
- Photo
- Issuing authority*
- Signature*
* Data marked with an asterisk is read from the document but not stored.
Is a copy of my ID retained?
The copy of your ID is not retained unless you are a non-EEA (European Economic Area) national. Only the required data from the ID is recorded as it is a legal obligation for the main contractor.
Is the fingerprint in the chip scanned or used?
The fingerprint in the passport/ID chip is not read or used by Bouwpas.
How is it determined what Bouwpas does with this data?
Bouwpas complies with regulations described by the Dutch Data Protection Authority:
- Dutch Data Protection Authority: Rules for verifying identity
- Dutch Data Protection Authority: Identity documents at work or for benefits

Frequently asked questions
I didn’t grant camera access. How can I proceed?
You will need to grant the app permission to use your camera. Go to your phone’s Settings and find the Privacy section.
The ID check with a Romanian ID was rejected. How do I resolve this?
Some Romanian ID cards have a blank back and no chip. The system automatically rejects these documents.
How to resolve it: Try the scan again. For both the “front” and “back” prompts, take a photo of the front of your ID.
How exactly does the app perform the ID check?
The app uses a photo of your ID to verify its appearance. IDs include a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) that the app also reads. This MRZ serves as the key to reading the chip in your ID.
The chip data is compared with the information visible on the photo (and that you can see with the naked eye). Additionally, the app compares the photo on your ID with a selfie you take. If the automatic check is inconclusive, a manual review may be performed.
The app does not check authenticity features such as infrared light or UV light, as your phone’s camera cannot perform these checks.
