This article specifically describes Dutch laws and regulations
Every business has a VAT number, including self-employed workers. The old VAT number of self-employed workers contained the BSN (Dutch citizen service number), which was prone to fraud. The government has therefore issued new numbers: the VAT identification number (VAT ID).
Important to know
Only sole proprietorships received a new number at the end of 2019
The structure of the number stays the same: country code NL, 9 digits, the letter 'B' and a random check number of 2 digits
The 9-digit number is now random and no longer contains the BSN (Dutch citizen service number) of the self-employed worker
Nothing changes for other subcontractors and foreign companies
Rule of thumb
Are you contacting the government? Then use the omzetbelastingnummer (revenue tax number) (for example 111234567B01)
Are you contacting other parties? Then use the VAT identification number (VAT ID) (for example NL000099998B57)
In Oribi WorkpassID you must always use the VAT identification number (with 'NL')
